You are really a very studious man, we know that you are doing a good job and we are enjoying reading your blogs. I think, you have made a very good progess in learning English, and if you can talk to the native speakers; they understand you, it means that you do not have any trouble in communicating in English. Like you, I also have some problems of pronunciation. I am very shy when I speak English, therefore I make a lot of mistakes in pronunciation. However, I hope that I can improve it and I think if we work hard we can always improve ourselves sooner or later and we should keep going until we achieve our goal that we can speak English nearly like native speakers. Everyone has his own reason to learn the second language: work, traveling, socializing in WWW etc. When I was a schoolboy (now I’m 41) and had been gone to ordinary soviet school I could study English. The problem was nobody, no pupils no teachers, know what it for. Everybody believed that it was impossible to use it. We couldn’t socialize with people of English-speaking countries. At that time nobody could suppose that once the Berlin Wall will be destroyed. So our generation doesn’t speak English.
In my opinion the most important thing in learning is motivation. The first time when I realized that my ignorance in English was a huge problem was a day when I start work on computer in 1992. But this trouble wasn’t a sufficient motivation for studding. Why? There is only one reason for learning, it is a socializing.

You have my same problem, don't you?
You know, as I already told it's quite difficult to find someone to have some English practise whit voice to voice, but not impossible!
Be patient and you'll find someone mother tongue or not (it doesn't matter) available to have a conversation with you. Sometimes speaking to a no mother tongue friend could be better because you could have same accent and same limits too.
After this great adventure, if you like we'll be abl to speak a little bit.

I have finally managed to find the time to reply for which I apologize has taking so long. Annette and I hope that you and your family are well.
As you know I have a new job and it has been very hard for me to get used to, the reason for this is that for the last 15 years my work has been office based and now I have returned to physical work, as I am not getting any younger my body has suffered due to some areas of work being quite heavy. World recession has had an effect on almost everyone and anyone who has lost their job due to this must consider themselves lucky to have found other employment. My salary is 1/3 compared to my last employment, but as we say in England "Beggars can't be choosers" in other words we have to be grateful for what we have.
Vito caro amico, next week I will look into securing with Skype now that we have a new computer which has built in a webcam and mic then we can chat. My Italian has become very rusty due to lack of use (I will have dictionary to hand :-)) but looking at your written English I have no doubt we will communicate very well in English.
I am now hurrying to write this as we are leaving soon to stay with Ken and Helen for the weekend, we will raise a glass to you this evening.
Oh, yes I like the photo's that you took whilst in England, they are some famous landmarks, but you live in one of the world's most picturesque places.

Thank you to share with us your precious experience of learning English. I was interesting in English from childhood, but problem was that nobody (even teachers) did not know English,in fact they were not able to speak on it freely and we had not just other possibilities to practice It (It was 1991-92).
I think to travel to the English native countries is the best way to become confident in English,but unfortunately not everyone can afford It.

I must say that I have exactly the same approach. I created even my private saying: "Step by step, day by day will be ok". I must admit that I am a self-educated, though nowdays when we have the Internet it is not such a problem, it is excellent source of knowledge. On the other hand I adore the music, and this also help me, though lyrics remember more the poetry than the language used in the daily life... Anyway like most people I have a big problem with speaking, though strangely enough, when I am abroad my pronunciation become very quickly fluent, even when I came back to home I have a problem with expressing myself in my native language for some time, it's strange but true... Probably I have a more developed aural memory and of course I understand better native Englishmen than persons from other countries... To my mind studying english is not easy how could be seem but don't give up in our life we have nothing for free.....

As you know, all people who learn languages have the same goal which is to be able to speak their favorite languages finally! For this purpose, I, as a person who have learnd by his self, have experienced afew important points to improve in speaking. So, I'd like to draw your attention to them , asking you experience them and let me know your view points about.
1- for being excellent in speaking, we need to listen to the conversation resorces around us, first.
2- vocabulary is a basic need in this way.
3- we should write down phrases and practice them from time to time for not to forget.
4- we do not need to put much time on grammar.

I think English is a universal language and that's why everyone is interested in learning it. Since people are travelling a lot these days, it becomes even more important to learn speaking English. As no matter where you go English is the only language you can communicate with others and I think this put more pressure on people to learn English language.

I am one of those lucky people who live in the UK which makes it a lot easier to learn the language but at times it could be very frustrating when I am speaking to someone and I can't find the right words to express my feelings clearly. In my opinion, learning to speak another language is a very slow process as you don't get the time to think in communication. Getting embarrassed over mistakes in communication was a big barrier for me and at times I avoided unnecessary communication. Gradually I realised that it is not my native language and I shouldn't be embarrassed on my mistakes. I think that realisation was a turning point for me and now I can communicate OK but still need to work a lot on my communication to become a more fluent speaker of English language. It is a big challange for me and hopefully, one day I will achieve this goal. So my advice to those who are learning another language is to speak as much as possible and don't let embarrassment effecting your learning skills. It all comes with experience.

It has been pleasure as always to read your article. Specially, there is no doubt that this article has been drawn more attention to the bloggers. In this article, namely learning english, you mentioned that there is no exact reason for you to improve english skills. In my opinion, curiosity to learn a new language and broaden your knowledge could be the driving force to your quest in learning english. However, i really appreciate your initiatives that you carried out to succed in your goal.
Moreover, i would like to thank you for sharing your experience with us as well as for providing good recomendations. I agree that we need to speak with native english speakers as much as possible. you also pointed out the difficulties we always face to make a conversation with native english speakers and i am glad to know that you overcame such problems.
Finally, i would like to provide my opinions about how to learn english as what i alwasy do. There is no alternative to read daily english newspaper, novel and magazines as it helps me to improve my vocabulary list and get familiar with complex sentence structures. For spoken english, as we mentioned earlier that we need to chat with people in english as much as possible. In addition, considering the difficulties to find native english speakers, we can also practise spoken english at home by talking ourself in front of the mirror on different topics. It will certainly increase your fluency in speoken english and give you more confidence. At least your initial mumbling problem will be perished. For written english, we should practise to write our emails and messages in english. In summary, all the points are mentioned so far, just few initiatives that might be useful to learn english. However, every learners need to find his own way to be expertised.

Learning a language and special this one has multiple benefits for us, but in my opinion the main purpose is to communicate with others since English is a universal language spoken in the world.

Vito, my humble advice for you is try to read at least one page by day, something new in order to learn how to spell words correctly. In my case, I'm reading an English book and I am learning always new words, expressions, punctuation and definitely this helps me a lot.

It is will known that English language has grown to international language. Most people leant now it and it is quite vital nodays to get acquainted with it. Of course, it is hard to become accomplished in it without proper practices. But now the overal pattern of our lage has drammatical changed thanks the appearing of modern technoligies. When I started to learn English it was a challenging task. in soviet time the level of teaching English was de decidedly low and I just did not have any help to learn the pronunciation. I still have often make mistakes in pronunciating some words as initially they were learn incorrectly. Now we all have interned which makes our live easier. I am sure should I have the resources which are free available now in the web I would be better user of English! So use the site ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ and BC learning english. There are mountains of useful information and materials which will definitely help you to sound natural ins english

I think it's enogh to study reading skill, writing skill and listtening skill through education program sites like this site. But As for speaking, it's difficult to improve your English, even though you use the education program sites. I think we have to talk to someone in English. To speak to someone in English, we need to have enough vocabulary, I think.

Anyway, when we should think about studyin English, we should do that: "Step by step, day by day will be ok". It's what Maja said. I agree with her.
Addition to that, we should enjoy learing English: visiting the UK, reading books, reading news,......

I started to learn words, after that i read one english grammer and started to whatvh english movies with english subtitres. I graduated 6 months ago . My major is phisical therapist but i couldn't find work in my country . One night i was in chat with another friend who live in london , i told to him about my problems that i can;t find work in bulgaria. he proposed to me to go in london adn to apply for insurance and permition for work . I went and try but i haven't succseed. Now i am in my home in bulgaria and looking for work here. i send a lot CV for candidate for work in my speciality without result. I forget to mention that i am 24 years old .. I wish evrebody good luck with learning of english and i think that this lenguages is incredibal because where to be you can make a conversation with english .. bb for nowww

I am reading your blog for the first time and you impressed me a lot. As like you, I also have strong desire to improve my English. I am not bothered about writing much, as while writing we can always look in a dictionary or thesaurus for the correct word, we can redo the sentence structure (unless it's not very complex type), but what bother me is the speaking. I can speak moderately well, but I want to speak like a native speaker with the proper neutral (ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½) accent, tone and intonation. It's a tough job to speak like a native unless one is not surrounded by lots of native speaker and a close friend or mentor around to correct every mistakes. I am not blessed with that, so I searched the web in and out and finally found some useful reading material that had helped me a lot to improve my speaking. I've been studying it for more than two months now, and I can tell you, I've improved a lot. Though I am still far away from reaching the eloquence of a native speaker. However, my ears has now developed sufficiently that I can tell if someone is making a wrong pronunciation. But while speaking, sometime my tongue goes to the old habit pronouncing some vowels or consonants in a wrong way. Old habit dies hard! So, the practice is going on, it may take time but I promised I won't stop practicing as long as I do not get it right. As like you, my mother tongue is not English, so I could not improve my English in the earlier part of my life. Moreover, the people around me were so fluent in speaking the non-native type of English, for long, I did not even know what was the right English.
There're two basic reasons for my interest in improving English: from childhood, for reasons unknown to me, I was always fascinated by the English language. I used to read English grammar and dictionary a lot. I wanted to be a pro in the language. I love the language, probably more than my own mother tongue. I read somewhere that Milton or someone learned Latin by only reading dictionaries. But, pronunciation can't be learned by reading books alone. One needs to hear it, say it and know the correct way of saying it. The other reason is I am appearing TOEFL to enroll in a Scottish University by the end of this year. For that, I must have to improve all the four wings of English, i.e., reading, writing, speaking and listening. I realized that I can do moderately well in all the three wings except the speaking part. So, I am now putting all my efforts in the speaking part alone. Sometime, it becomes frustrating when I see no significant improvement. I reassure myself saying that Rome was not built in a day, so as my old habit of pronouncing the wrong way would not go away in a week or month. It requires continuous conscious effort. I liked your interest towards English. Till I read you blog, I was having the impression that it was only me who had the serious affection for English. Now I know, I am not alone. I would love to know more about the ways you're incorporating to improve your English, exchange ideas and knowledge. I wish you good luck in your English learning process and thank you for your interesting blogs.

I don't know the real reason because I'm so interested to study English, believe me.
It's something strange, something I have inside who keep me interested in it.
My first problem it obviously the time, always not sufficient.
When I return at home in the evening after work sometimes I don't fell like studying English and sometimes even if I'd like it I don't have enough time for that......so every day I find time even to read a litte bit in English or to write it.
Your knowledges are obviously better of mine, I still have a lot of things to learn or to improve, unfoertunately....

So, we've the same level of interest in learning the same language. Seems, we're having a strong reason to end up being good friends...lol..(lol means - laugh out loud). You're right, even I face problems in managing my time.
Well, I think I should introduce myself to you. I am an Indian, born, brought up and educated in India and currently working in Saudi Arabia. As like you, after a hard days work, I too find it extremely difficult to give time for studying & practising English. But throughout the day, I've to read and write many mails (as part of my job) in English and I speak with my colleagues in English. So, in that sense, I guess I am slightly in a better position than you. Yes, I would love to add you in my skype. I don't know if we're allowed to exchange such details through these blogs. It is a.m.rajeeb, let me know yours. I can later share some useful info with you. I am sure it'll dramatically improve your speaking part. But for writing good English, there're no alternatives to knowing the correct grammar and reading a lots of books and novels written by various writers. I'll let you know some of those in my later posts. You know, I also make a lots of mistakes. Just now, I re-read my earlier reply to you and realised that there're bundle of mistakes. I believe, you could identify those, and read it corrected knowing that it came from a learner and not from a teacher...lol..

Unfortunately I don't have that possibility because we only have italian customers.

About English novels to read I agree with you but you know I think that it's diffucult too.
I never read an English book, first of all because is difficult to find a book with an easy English, than because very often there are a lot of strange difficult words to traslate.
Last week I was looking for some easy English stories on line but without success. About your first message please excuse me but I didn't find mistakes because I was too carefull to understand it.
Anyway you can't compare your messages with mines, as you already told me I need to improve my grammar knowledges.

I believe you might know about Chess, it's a board game and scholars say that it was originated in India.

I've not check my skype yet, I'll definitely add you as soon as I log in there. What time do you usually come online to skype? You're right, my name is Rajeeb. Hey, don't worry, I am here to help you out to improve your English. I can correct your mistakes if you don't mind but I may not be able to explain the rules, as I am not an English teacher and I may not be aware of all the rules. First tell me, in a scale of 10 (where 10 is the most proficient), what do you rate yourselves in English knowledge (reading, writing, speaking and listening)? It'll be good to know where you stand right now and where you want to go (how much improvement you want).

I read your reply twice and I'll correct some of the mistakes that I could identify, okay (hope you won't mind):
1) ....be my short knowledgeses but maybe it could me : knowledge ( it's a collective noun and it does not have plural forms) and the 'me' should be 'be', I believe it's a typo error.
2).. able to made you laugh. : to make (not made), all verbs after to should be in present tense form ( e.g, to go, to eat etc.)
3)... than because very often there : it should be 'then' (not than...than is used while comparing two things, e.g, Italy plays better football than Spain).

There're other smaller mistakes, I omit it for the time. It's okay to make mistakes, it's a part of the learning process.

I'll catch you soon on skype. And don't worry about the speaking mistakes, I make plenty of them. I'll try to help you out in every possible way. Do you watch English movies? I watch movies a lot. Let me know your favourite movies.

I tried to call you on skype today but without success because you didn't accepted my invite yet. I'm usually on skype after nine o'clock Italian time but unfortunately I don't know how many hours we have of different time. Let me know please.
I'd like to thank you for your corrections, it's really important to me, you're very kind.
I hope to learn something more doing practise writing and reading for you. Anyway I know how is important to know the grammatical rules but I think that this one is maybe my first big problem, because to use the right tens practising English is always very hard to me.
Now I'd like to reply about a scale of knowledge you asked me.
I'm a little bit embarrassed about that because I don't think to have a good levels, maybe 4 for listening and speaking and 5 for reading and writing.
We usually considere "sufficient" for everything 6, so I don't think to have sufficient English knowledge. I'm sorry for that, anyway I'm so enthusiastic for my first progresses and I'd really like to learn English better in the future not to have problems to read, write and speak English language.
Unfortunately I can't watch English TV because I don't have the SAT channel so we don't have English programmes to follow.
Sometimes I watch an Italian adventure DVD but in English language, it's really hard for me but I prefere to watch without the subtitles.

Well, I'll be accepting you on skype today. The time difference is 2 hours, Saudi is 2 hours ahead of Italy. It means when it's 9 pm at your place, here it is 11 pm.

Don't feel embarrassed about your English, I feel it's sufficiently good. Moreover, you've the potential to improve it to the excellent level, as you have strong desire to improve it. I also consider myself at sufficient level only. English is a very tricky language and can be bent the way one wants. It has a million of words; imagine, how many different ways one can express themselves. However, a native educated speaker may know only 10-15 thousand words. I read somewhere that Shakespeare, the most famous English dramatist used only 15 thousand words to write his masterpieces!

Okay, to improve in any foreign language, one has to expose themselves to that language as much as they can. I suggest you watching some English movies, reading some newspaper, magazines or books and listening music if possible. You may begin with the movie 'The pursuit of happyness' starring Will Smith, it's my one of the favourite movies. Note the spelling of happyness (it should be happiness), it was intentionally spelled incorrectly. Also, try to listen to ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ news in radio. I hear it everyday, while driving, while at home doing some household work. The news reader speaks excellent English, I love the way they speak. I am especially fond of Mr. James Kumaraswamy.

Always keep handy a dictionary with you at home. Whenever you find a new word, check it's meaning, uses, anto & synonyms (opposite & same meaning words) and try to use those newly learned words in your mail, blogs and anywhere you can. Eventually you'll realise that you've mastered a lots of new words.

Regarding grammar, it's little difficult to master overnight. There are lots of rules and takes time and practice to master it. If you can provide your mail id, I can send some soft copy of good grammar books. I too get confused sometime with it, especially with prepositions. However, the people are understanding and they ignore small mistakes.

I have read your Blog and happy to know about your learning about English language and your passion for learning.Let me introduce myself, My name is tayyab and I 'm from Pakistan.I would like to share my story here.I am the person who dont like english and hate english from the begining of my class.I always get only passing marks in english.Now on my job place the people around me are very good in English and I feel embarras when my boss said to me to write letters to somewhere for official purpose and i cant do so.I really want to improve my writing skills and explore other portions of english.I am participating in Blogs and posting comments to improve my english.

You both have good writing skills specially i am impressed with Mr.Rajeeb.I would only request you to please give some tips or exercises to improve writing skills and also please correct my writing posts.

You are welcome to ÃÛÑ¿´«Ã½ Learning English website. We all have a common goal here, that is to improve our written and spoken English. I read your post, and I would say you've fairly good command on English. Just you've to be little careful while writing to avoid simple mistakes (though such mistakes are okay in informal writing like mail, blogs etc.), but if you're careful even in informal writing than it'll reflect in your formal writings too. As an example, you've written that '....my name is tayyab...', the 't' of tayyab should be capital (the first letter of of any proper noun should be capital), so correctly it should be '...my name is Tayyab..', I know it's acceptable in informal writing, but still if you keep an eye to avoid such mistakes, it'll help you in the long run. Your English is already very good, it just needs a little bit polishing. And you're right, the more you participate in blogs and such activities, the more you'll improve. I wish you all the best in your English improving.

Hello Rajeeb and how are you?
I know I'm late, please excuse me for that.
My latest days were really busy for me with a lot of snow too.
Very often is nice when it's snowing slowly but just for a bit because when you can't go to your office, to school or to go shopping it's really difficult.
We have a really strong cold weather at the moment and we hope to have the better season soon.
At last all our vegetables will be really expensive in the future and to buy them will be quiet difficult.
I obviously didn't forget about you and I'm glad to meet you again after our new friend's message.
As I already told him he doesn't seam me so bad writing in English and I told him to do more practise, just a little bid every day, like me.

Yeah, I've heard about the snow fall in many parts of Europe. I can't imagine how life would be in -30 degrees, especially when I am from a tropical region and never ever seen a snow fall in my life! I just remember the famous line from the poem 'Ode to the west wind' by Shelley, 'If winter comes, can spring be far behind' (I don't know much of poem but googled it for you). I wish you'll have a warmer season soon. Would you tell me how do you keep yourself warm during such cold winter?

Let me tell you what I think about the best way to learn and speak English. I think the best way to learn and speak English is to go to countries where English is an official language. You will speak English fluently and accurately in the future. So be patient my friend!
