The Age of no Privacy

Post categories:

Nick Nick | 16:35 UK time, Friday, 27 April 2012

I have to confess: I am a paranoiac. Not in a severe way, but still: I always try to clean up my internet traces, not to publish sensitive information (photos, addresses, telephone numbers) on the Net and keep my privacy as private as possible.

I do not work with secrets nor do illegal stuff, I just clearly see how "transparent" we are in the eyes of everyone who is interested - with all these social networks and global companies, steadily gathering data on us.

Anyway, it does not help a lot: it seems that we live in a century where true privacy is a luxury.

Big brother is watching you

Whether you are looking for something or just surfing around, you leave multiple traces on the Net. Sites log your visits: an IP address, a browser, a screen size, which site you have just visited, what you do on that site and so on and so forth.

Providers gather data about you - in case special services might need the data of possible criminals. They know not only which sites you visit, but also your personal ID (passport), address, mobile phones, et cetera.

Big companies gather data about you (and they really do know a lot!). For instance, Google does it now across multiple services: Mail, YouTube, Search - anything will do. It might be scary if you just imagine what a huge dossier Google has on you - go and check . They know our interests, hobbies, geographic location... They say it`s aimed at providing better services. Might be, might be. But how could we control them?

Mobile phones with all of our private data like SMSes, calendars, photos... Those all nude celebrity leaks from phones - it`s also a growing challenge. As phones become smarter each year, as we pump more information to these gadgets, loss of the phone usually means

The nail in the coffin of privacy are definitely social networks. They allow you to share everything about yourselves. Even if you do censor yourself or share it only with friends... Well, it`s no private at all.

Is anonymity a solution?

Despite we`re steadily moving from the "anarchic" Internet of 90-s and early 2000-s to the controlled and not-really-anonymous Net, there are still options to surf anonymously.

Turn off everything (cache/history/etc), do not log on to anywhere, use proxies - you might be unspotted for a while. But even the most anonymous guys somehow get caught.

And also while being anonymous you lose a huge part of modern life conveniences: you cannot use geolocation properly, control your personal accounts or use most services that reuire a registration.

Privacy is not an option. Just put up with it

Well, okay. I`m not Brad Pitt or other celebrity. I`m not an owner of multimillion business. I don`t know valued secrets to worry about. I`m just the person. Why should I care?

Okay, may all the world have an access to pictures of me and my wife or to texts where we were exchanging silly compliments. Okay, let all the world know my mobile number or home address - so what? Why might I be of interest to them? Go ahead, call me or drop me a line by conventional paper letter. Or try to rob/insult me, but I`ll be a criminal offence. People staring at the private stuff is supposedly not good, but why should we worry?

Maybe we should not. But also let us not forget that any information you post on the networks might be really sensitive. Post that you`re on a vacation and your address - voila, malefactors underline a fresh line in their dark lists. Your amusing photo where you were dancing drunk might come to light few years later, when you`ll be a director or company ruler.

So please, be little bit careful about your privacy, and please share your thoughts on the issue!

    Hello Nick.
Another interesting and important topic ,which concerns each of us in a different way. There is no way to hide from the fact that no matter how hard we try we can't be invisible on the Net.It is just a matter of time to identify someone's personnal details and so on.As you said, most of us really are an ordinary people and got nothing to hide.We can blame the Net for its drawbacks, but I personnaly think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages hugely.I try to be as private as possible on the social networking ,too and not relly worried if someone tries to find about me.It will be just waste of someone's time.
I 've enjoyed reading your articles and wish you all the best!

    Hi Nick,

'Privacy' is a very sensitive topic in today's internet world. However, I am so insignificant that it really does not matter if my privacy has been compromised or not.

We human are naturally intelligent and creative and we learn from other's and often from our own mistakes. So, now a days, even in the most social networking sites and blogs people comment intelligently without revealing much of their identity while dealing in sensitive issues. I heard about the Chinese bloggers and internet users, how intelligently they handle the govt.'s continuous monitoring and restrictions and usually speak in code and indirect languages. A program on this was aired in the 蜜芽传媒 radio recently.

In personal front, I experienced 'compromising of privacy' very closely - once someone hacked my or my friend's gmail account (I am not sure whose account was actually compromised), and all the conversations that we had through google talk was sent both to me and my friend, of course with an indecent and threatening sort of mail. But who cares! I am no Brad Pitt!! But this is bad, to peep on other's; but the world is full of Peeping Toms.

Thank you for your beautiful article.

    Best Wishes,
    Rajeeb

    Hi Nick

You thoughts reminded me about the novel 鈥淲e鈥 by E. Zamyatin. In his anti-utopia people鈥檚 thoughts and conduct were controlled by the state, the walls of their houses were transparent etc.
I used to think that it was Zamyatin鈥檚 prediction about totalitarian regime which our country experienced in the 20th century. But nowadays we can see that even in democratic countries it happens that secret data about private life reveals, that wire-tapping exists and so on. Maybe our world is gradually drifting to another form of control. You鈥檝e described here one of its sides.

    Take care

    Dear Nick,

Hi, Nick. Thank you for posting a new write-up. I wonder where is your idea come from to bring it topic up? It鈥檚 a great topic. I think that would be a controversial subject to debate the advantage and disadvantage about private data control of Internet. In this generation, smartphones seem like basic equipment for everyone. We don鈥檛 even want to miss a message, an email or our friend鈥 news in Facebook. We hope We can catch them all. If we're not, we look like we can鈥檛 catch up conversation with our friends. Perhaps, a part of people they act this way reluctantly.

But we always look things have two perspectives, some maybe willing to share their private data because they want providers give particular Internet design to them. So they just press okay or agree without a glance when they first download and use a new application in their smartphones. We can think of this way, if companies didn鈥檛 exploit people so-call Internet regulation鈥檚 loopholes to 鈥淪TEAL鈥 our information, how come we can enjoy perfect services nowadays. However, the world is improving indeed.

And the other side, it seems like we have a ton of drawbacks to criticise businessmen who exploits our data to grow their business up. We鈥檙e like no privacy even we hide at home. Except we plug out our Internet cable or turn off our Wi-Fi. I had an experience. Once I toured around Internet then I got a several ads in my mailbox after the day. Let me say that, there is no free lunch in the world. You registered an email without paying. You got instant information or listened your favour songs in Internet without a fee. So you鈥檙e going to pay for that through some ways.

In this century, a lot of things are hard to handle individually because what the world needs that鈥檚 interaction. We no longer become one-man-army. We鈥檙e so close to others now. Maybe you can live alone if you鈥檙e a barbarian. As a result, let鈥檚 keep protecting our personal right and enjoy the freedom that provided form the world.

Thank for your perfect article once again!!

    Blessings,
    Sai-fung

    Hello Nick

You know I never thought so seriously on this issue, but after I have red your post I concluded that indeed it can be dangerous in some way for your personality. On this problem I have thought locally,in my circle of acquaintances.Generally I am not lover of social networks, because there, your life is so transparent and everyone ask you what are you doing and what are you going to do so you feel somewhat stressful in such a situation. So why I don't love them. I think it will be expanded more and more as times run ahead and with that we can not do nothing. There is only one way out of a situation don't use internet at all :-) In the some case you can hide or point out the wrong information, but how surprised I was when I was trying to register in one of the American website and they ask SSN and of course I could not get registered there. And I am afraid that in near future everywhere will be such rules, they will require more and more information.

    Hi Nick,

Privacy matters till you want. A human physic i, He wants to be renowned , he wants to be noticeable among the people. Social Media is fomenting revolution Social media or networking sites posses all these magnetism, where a newbie can easily be trapped, or become prevalent.

Intentionally or UN-Intentionally, people have been sharing personal interest over internet. posting their personal, family pictures, sharing their daily habits, their work routine etc, for me it s grave matter, because you are the one yourself providing exposure to other.

On the other hand, you will become become (net)crowed-pleasing personality via Youtube, College girls and guys share their ideas over facebook, share their interests and get acquainted , which later on then become enormous community.

Sharing of focused ideas to others are not bad; though, sharing personal habits, attitudes and life are not adviseable.

Beware that, social networking sites have full-scale impact on your personal, and professional life. Professionals posting their profiles on sites, like linked-in; Employers are seeking your profile, which in turns elevate your profile.

So, there are some cause and benefit, question is how do you get handle that ?

    Hi Nick,

A coin has two sides. When we make use of the broadcasting stuff, we have to accept the drawbacks of it. Personally, I tried to persuade myself and my family to choose the best way to make good use of it. Thank you.

Hello Nick, nice to meet you here. My name is Dong_Fong and I am currently attending Nation Taiwan University of Science and Technology of Taipei in Taiwan.
In today鈥檚 world, privacy indeed plays an important role in our life. Privacy means the ability of an individual or group to seclude themselves or information about themselves and thereby reveal themselves selectively. Once our personal data is revealed to the public or on the Net, that will cause a potential threat to our rights. For example, some bad guys might use our personal data such as bank account, birthday, ID numbers, and some other information, to do illegal things. Especially in this generation, the tech is so advanced that it influences our life in many ways. Take Facebbok for example, almost all of us update our state every day and share our life experience with our friends. I think this will definitely boost our emotional connections. However, if we don鈥檛 adjust our control of privacy, almost everyone on the social website can search your name, school, company, cell phone number, birthday and other information they want. That way, we expose ourselves in a very risky situation. If we issue some insulting remarks about others on the Net, we might be accused of slandering.
On the other hand, however, the age of no privacy is somehow good and useful for the police to fight against crime. Therefore, it鈥檚 hard to tell which one is right. That all depends on the way we use it. But protecting our privacy is absolutely right.
Thank you once again for your inspiring article, which makes me think more thoroughly about privacy.
    Blessings,
    Dong_Fong

    Hi Nick,

I consider it necessary to discuss the safe using of internet and social networks. But more importancy has the question, in which foundations is based on the debete on this topic.

We can trace two philosophical schools and traditions, whose ideas are contained in this discussion:

    1) The french structuralism (especially M. Foucault) promotes the point of view we live in a system of control and the modern state is constantly improving the ways to discipline its citizens. A hospital, school or prison are institutions of which goal is to train their charges. And we can add to it, that internet is playing the same role, today. But the power is distributed not only among civil services, but also to private hands (Google etc.). So individualism has to be rejected in the name of freedom. (Not Me but social structure (or discourse) must be changed).

    2) British individualism is opposed to marxist (or structuralist) opinion. The individualism (extendet to utilitarism of J. S. Mill) doesn't identify structure (system) as the source of human freedom, but put emphasis on human responsibility. I have to change my behavior, and then I can start changing the world.

Why should be interesting the mentioning of these two philosophical movements for this topic? Because both of them are present in the viewes of all bloggers and both both of them are based on the demand of human freedom. Freedom of the man is considered to be the last goal of human being. Why just this sense of life?

The man in the Middle Age was not looking for increasing of freedom but tried to live to good purpose. I am affraid our society is concetrated on the freedom of personal needs, too much, forgetting the really freedom of the man: the possibility to be more than an animal, to be a meanigful being. (The individualism, collectivism, consumerism of today represent forms of reduction the human being to his animal site.) Augustinus Aurelius said: Love and do what you will. I think that's the way not be fearful little boy but a to be a self-confident and naturally good member of society.
