"Overlooking
City Square is the Norwich Union building.
"This
is not a particular favourite of mine but is most definitely a statement
building.
"From
different angles this building can look very different from dumpy
to elegantly slim.

"City
Square was originally laid out in 1903 and has been through several
changes since then.
"The
building was finished in 1997 and dominating the north corner of
City Square it is a striking addition to the city skyline.
"Featuring
a glazed atrium and a lift tower, it is topped off with a tensile
fabric roof.

"What
it clearly did was set a new standard to take over from the 'Leeds
Look' consisting of red brick, grey slates and pyramid shapes.
" It had quite a hold at one stage and the highlight building
was the Magistrates Courts.
"I am sure in the future the courts will be a listed building.
It is visually interesting, if a little eccentric, and much better
than the other buildings in this style that are rather bland.
"The
"Look" was an interim response in the 1980s for architecture that
had a human scale and was pleasing on the eye following some of
the mistakes of the 1960s and 70s."
