The
Calls is an ancient street right alongside the River Aire. Not so
long ago it was a derelict backwater, this area of Leeds has led the
revival of the city centre's fortune. |

"The
former mill that is 42 The Calls was originally a flour mill.
"It
was built in the late eighteenth century, although parts date from
the 1830s and was completely derelict before the conversion during
the late 1980s.
"Before
the refurbishment it was hard to imagine such an award-winning prestigious
building in an area famed as a derelict, red-light district.

"It
is a fantastic but sympathetic modern conversion and a very pleasant
hotel.
"The
area around The Calls has survived in very good form and it is worth
a walk around the paved streets.
"The area has been preserved because the businesses fell into
disuse as the focus of the city moved away from the water."
