"Historically
this area was once a mass of narrow yards housing slaughter houses
and butcher shops.
"Although
these had been bought up and redeveloped by the early 1900s.
"The
Victoria Quarter came into being in 1989-90 combining the existing
County Arcade , between Briggate and Vicar Lane with a new undercover
development.
"The
former Queen Victoria Street was open to the elements but converted
with a contemporary roof, even though the Edwardian facades were
kept.
"So
Leeds has the largest roof of modern stained glass, creating a real
talking point above the shoppers' heads.
"Look out for rich marbles, mosiacs, tiles and wrought iron
especially in County Arcade.
"Look
up for the wonderful mosiac figures representing arts and industries
in the arcade's three domes."
